Ayumi Hamasaki really is a hero of mine. Mostly for selfish reasons but sometimes it's because she's an awesome human. One of the many ways in which she displays her awesomeness is using her celebrity to advocate human rights. Human rights are my favorite! Seriously though, she made this huge post on Facebook (or at least, that's where I saw it) that is a pep talk, of sorts, for LGBTQ community and women in Japan.

We all know she's always been a vocal advocate for LGBTQ and the power of women, as shown in videos, her performances, some of her lyrics, but I haven't read anything that, well, criticizes Japan's rather slow progression toward this century-where minority rights are concerned. I know it's not a big, abrasive post, it's not going to make a huge controversy or anything, which kind of makes it even better-she didn't write it for attention. She was just sharing her thoughts and I love her all the more for it. She is seriously a magnificent human.

I lifted the translation (http://www.ayuangel.com) because the Google Translate sucks and I don't have time to fix it:

Quote:
Ayumi wonders about minorities on the occasion of the day against homophobia and transphobia.

For a long time, Ayumi is committed to this cause, and for the past few years Ayumi has openly expressed her support for the LGBT community. Beyond her personal messages, she had in 2012 in her clip How beautiful you are, filmed couples and the « first kiss between two men in a Japanese mv » between actor Koh Masaki and his companion.

In Japan the LGBT community is still poorly recognized and represented beyond its « glamorous » use for idols or caricatured for « comic » purposes. Ayumi in a message on social networks questions the lack of consideration in Japan for « minorities » through a personal anecdote.

« Since my early days, I’ve always loved the Shinjuku neighborhood » 2 chome « (Japanese subdivision of a neighborhood), and since my youth I have been filled with memories of this neighborhood. At that time when I was busy like mad, whether it be to go to dinner after work, or for the evenings and « boozy » nights, when I wanted to cry cause of tiredness or for to celebrate a happy event, it was always in Shinjuku 2 chome, and last night, a little relieved by the opening of the Tour of this year that went smoothly, I went to celebrate it in a bar run by a friend. Shinjuku 2 chome: still small and narrow, always as old, always the smell of cigarettes (forgive me boss, but you know, it’s a compliment, huh? Laughs), always those posters on the walls Make me find what I really am but that also make a bit nostalgic .. And Today I saw a lady whom I have known for a very long time and who is very important to me. And today I realized that the words she said to me last night echoed in my head and grew. This is a real question: why in Japan does the understanding of minorities progress very slowly? Whether it concerns sexual minorities such as LGBT people, whether it concerns minorities of opinion such as the power of women at work in relation to men … I believe that I, too, will continue my journey by considering myself as part of ‘a minority. Minority doesn’t mean weak and majority doesn’t mean strong. happiest are the stronger! Come on, keep laughing and laughing again! «
